The Brookland Foundation is excited to announce its new partnership with Choose Healthy Life and The Charity Foundation. As we embark upon a collaborative effort to support the health and well-being of our community, we will work to assist those who need help in understanding and accessing health insurance coverage. Choose Healthy Life, a New York-based nonprofit organization focuses on providing the Black church with the necessary resources, training, and support to address health disparities in hard-to-reach communities. The Charity Foundation, based in North Charleston, has been working for years to cultivate a community of multi-generational and economically stable individuals and families. As we celebrate 30 years of The Brookland Foundation’s existence, this partnership comes in perfect timing. We could not think of a better way to celebrate three decades of service and outreach than by launching this meaningful partnership and working to advance health equity throughout the state of South Carolina.
An estimated 469,000 South Carolinians are uninsured, ranking our state 12th among the states with the highest uninsured rates. In addition, African Americans are disproportionately impacted by the lack of coverage due to several factors including economic barriers, geographic location, employment status, and historical inequities in the healthcare system. The partnership between Choose Healthy Life, The Charity Foundation, and Brookland Foundation is a strong one because it leverages each organization’s strengths to address health disparities, enhance community wellbeing, and improve health outcomes.
At Brookland Foundation we understand that health insurance is more than just a financial instrument; It is also a bridge to preventive care, timely medical attention, and peace of mind. Health insurance enables us to take care of ourselves and our families, prepares us for some of life’s challenges, and ensures that when we need affordable care, it is available to us. Having health insurance allows us to focus on what truly matters without the constant worry of unexpected medical expenses that may be incurred by us or our loved ones.
Our partnership with Choose Healthy Life, The Charity Foundation, and 8 South Carolina churches, brings a faith-centered approach to serving 15 counties across our state, many of which include African American communities that remain underserved and uninsured. This transformative project, funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is potentially a five-year, 5.8-million-dollar initiative that presents us with a unique opportunity to make a significant difference. We now have the opportunity to:
Help our communities live abundant lives
Pave the way for a brighter future, where health and happiness are within everyone’s reach
Provide crucial assistance in open enrollment, enabling more people to access the health coverage they need
As a part of this initiative, we now have a federally certified Health Navigator here at Brookland who is available to assist residents throughout the Midlands. Our purpose is to help people navigate the entire process of securing affordable health insurance that fits their needs and budget. We are here to assist you in understanding and enrolling in coverage offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace. We will provide free unbiased guidance on eligibility, plan selection, and post-enrollment support.
For enrollment assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to our Health Navigator by phone at 803.728.3358, or visit us online at brooklandfoundation.org for more information. To make this project a success, we invite everyone to join us in creating a healthier community by helping us spread the word to your family, friends, family and neighbors.
Thank you for "Moving Mountains for Community."
Sincerely,
Kristopher J. Jones
