Letter From the Chairman

"Reaching out to Serve the Community" is the theme of The Brookland Foundation. This theme ably captures our desire to offer quality programs and services to the Greater Columbia Community and conveys our mission of promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment.

We are so very proud of The Foundation's five programs and its many volunteers who donate endless hours to our success. The Home less Outreach Program  was presented a special certificate of recognition by the Veterans Affairs Office in 1999 for their service to the Homeless of the Midlands. They have also been the recipients of several grants including the Central Carolina Community Foundation and the Sisters of Charity Foundation to support and encourage the expansion of their Saturday outreach work. The Black Male Conference, which has been in existence for more than 10 years, attracts 3,000+ participants and vendors to a three-day conference to discuss the important role of the Black Male in family life and celebrate the achievements of black boys, adolescents and men.  The HIV/AIDS Care Team sponsors educational workshops, conducts quarterly forums and distributes literature about this deadly virus and advocates ways to prevent further spread of the disease. Members of this care team work closely with the families who are battling AIDS through home visits, telephone contacts and social outings.  The Tutorial /Educational Employment Program works with school-aged youngsters during the school year to improve their academic performance. Volunteer Tutors stress mathematics, the sciences and reading and they promote study skills, time management' test-taking techniques and computer proficiency.  The Recreation Center offers a summer enrichment program for youth and the Annual Red & White Affair for Seniors.
