Letter From the Chairman
"Reaching out to Serve the Community" is the theme of The Brookland Foundation. This theme ably captures our desire to offer quality programs and services to the Greater Columbia Community and conveys our mission of promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment.
We are so very proud of The Foundation's five programs and its many volunteers who donate endless hours to our success. The Home less Outreach Program was presented a special certificate of recognition by the Veterans Affairs Office in 1999 for their service to the Homeless of the Midlands. They have also been the recipients of several grants including the Central Carolina Community Foundation and the Sisters of Charity Foundation to support and encourage the expansion of their Saturday outreach work. The Male Initiative, which has been in existence for more than 10 years, seeks to educate our young men through workshops and conferences on the important role of the Male in family life and celebrate the achievements of boys, adolescents and men. The HIV/AIDS Care Team sponsors educational workshops, conducts quarterly forums and distributes literature about this deadly virus and advocates ways to prevent further spread of the disease. Members of this care team work closely with the families who are battling AIDS through home visits, telephone contacts and social outings. The Tutorial /Educational Employment Program works with school-aged youngsters during the school year to improve their academic performance. Volunteer Tutors stress mathematics, the sciences and reading and they promote study skills, time management' test-taking techniques and computer proficiency. Health & Wellness Program educates our community with information that encourages the pursuit of optimal health and decreases health disparities among all races. The Health and Wellness programs sponsor projects that provides assistance to the community, such as The Mustard Seed Project, The Color Pink Project, Relay for Life, Project Young Athletes, Annual Community Health Fair, Community/Church organization Assistance, Wellness Center Weight Loss Challenge, Red Dress/Red Tie Campaign and Health Career Scholarship Awards.
With the generous support of the Brookland Baptist Church family, the financial investment from our corporate partners and the leadership of the Board of Directors, The foundation has made tremendous progress over the last few years and literally, touched the lives of thousands of people young and old. Through the generosity of our corporate partners, The Foundation has been able to employ a part-time Director of Development who will take the organization to even greater heights.
And lastly, we are so very proud of you, our supporters and friends, for your commitment to our cause, your gracious understanding of our transitions, and most importantly, for your continued gifts of time and resources. Thank you for making The Foundation a viable entity in the community. Thank you for making the difference. Thank you for being a Mountain Mover.
